About Psyllium

History

The genus Plantago contains over 200 species. Psyllium Plantago Ovata are produced commercially in India and commercially distributed in several European countries, U.S.A and other parts of the Globe.

Psyllium stalks contain tiny seeds, also called Psyllium, covered by husks, which are the parts used in foods. There are several species of psyllium, but the seed husks from Plantago ovata, also known as blonde psyllium, have the best quality and highest fiber content. Psyllium is an exceptional fiber because it acts like a sponge serving to clean the bowels.

Psyllium is expansively cultivated in many parts of the globe. Shrubby perennial plants with narrow green leaves put up spikes of small flowers that mature into seedpods. Psyllium seeds and Psyllium husks are harvested and used in healing. Psyllium is known as different name such as SAT ISABGOL in Sanskrit. Its botanical name is Plantago Ovata.

Uses & its Application:

Psyllium has broad range of medical and industrial applications.

In medical, Psyllium is used to treat constipation as a bulk-forming laxative. It absorbs liquid in the intestines, swells, and forms a bulky stool, which is easy to pass. Psyllium has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in India and in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It has also been used in Europe and North America from last few years. It is widely considered in medical as very safe and effective when used in recommended doses for constipation and diarrhoea.

It is being used as a thickener in ice cream and frozen deserts. The viscosity of Psyllium mucilage dispersions are relatively unaffected between temperatures of 68 to 122°F, by pH from 2 to 10 and by salt (sodium chloride) concentrations up to 0.15 M. These properties in combination with psyllium's natural fiber characteristic may lead to increased use by the food processing industry. Psyllium can be used as a wonder product in health drinks, beverages, ice cream, bread, biscuits, other bakery products, rice cakes, jams, instant noodles, breakfast cereals etc., to improve the fiber content of the food as also to increase the bulk of the food.

Psyllium Husk may also be added to fresh fruit drinks or flavoured drinks to improve the mouth-feel of the drink and make it more rich and impart good consistency to it.

Psyllium industrial uses are to prevent landscaping, soil erosion, animal feed, as a thickening agent in some pharmaceutical and food industry.
